The president of Fleming College in Peterborough, Ont., Maureen Adamson, expressed confusion over a city council motion to lobby governments following the college’s decision to cut 29 programs starting this fall. The college faces a significant revenue loss due to funding shortfalls, especially from a new cap on international students by the federal government.
Despite losing millions in revenue, Fleming College has high international student enrollment, with nearly 30% of its students coming from outside of Canada. The college is estimating a $40 million loss at its Toronto campus alone. The decision to cut programs came after realizing that some were undersubscribed and had high delivery costs.
The City of Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes passed motions to advocate for increased government support to colleges and address the impact of program cuts on the local economy. Fleming College was not consulted on these motions, leading to confusion and concerns from the college’s perspective.
While some local businesses and organizations voiced worries about recruiting skilled workers and economic setbacks, efforts are being made to mitigate layoffs and explore potential partnerships to revive programs in the future.
