The ICC has issued arrest warrants for former Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov on suspicion of crimes against humanity and war crimes in Ukraine between 2022 and 2023.
President Zelensky welcomed the warrants as justice for Russian crimes against Ukrainians. TASS reported Russia’s security council deeming the ICC’s decision insignificant.
The warrants relate to attacks on Ukrainian power plants and civilian infrastructure, deemed war crimes by the ICC. The court has made them public in hopes of preventing further crimes.
‘Justice will be served’
The ICC’s actions aim to hold accountable those responsible for attacks on civilians and infrastructure, ensuring justice prevails in the face of ongoing conflict.
