Deputy Speaker’s role, powers & frequency of Opposition MP holds

The Opposition’s Bid for Deputy Speaker Post in Lok Sabha

With the increased strength of Opposition members in the Lok Sabha, there is a push to secure the Deputy Speaker post, a position that has been vacant since 2019.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has expressed that the Opposition will support the government’s choice for the Speaker if the Deputy Speaker post is granted to them. However, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is yet to respond to this demand.

The ruling BJP-led NDA nominated Om Birla for the Speaker position, but the Opposition disrupted the bid by nominating Kodikunnil Suresh, leading to an election.

Powers of the Deputy Speaker

The Deputy Speaker assumes the Speaker’s duties if the position is vacant. The Deputy Speaker wields the same powers as the Speaker when presiding over the House.

Election of the Deputy Speaker

The Deputy Speaker is elected by Lok Sabha members in a subsequent session following the Speaker’s election. The Deputy Speaker holds office until the House is dissolved.

Historically, Deputy Speakers have filled in for Speakers in case of vacancy. The post has been held by members from various parties over the years.
