China-Canada Trade War

China has issued a warning to Canada, stating that it will take “resolute actions” to defend its rights and interests if Canada proceeds with imposing tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicle imports. This comes as Canadian Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland announced plans for a surtax on Chinese EVs due to alleged unfair competition in the industry.

The Chinese Embassy in Ottawa emphasized that China’s EV industry’s success is a result of technological innovation, established supply chains, and market competition, dismissing allegations of overcapacity and dependence on subsidies. The embassy also highlighted potential violations of WTO rules and negative impacts on bilateral relations.

Notably, both the US and the European Commission have taken similar actions against Chinese EV imports, prompting warnings of legal action from Beijing. The escalating trade tensions signal a challenging road ahead for global EV trade.
