ASUU protests FG’s failure to implement 2009 agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is disappointed with the Federal Government’s failure to implement the 2009 agreement reached with the Union. The neglect of the educational sector and the undermining of ASUU members’ efforts has been a cause for concern.

During a peaceful protest in Ile-Ife led by Prof. Anthony Odiwe, the OAU Branch Chairman, Union members expressed their discontent through placards with messages like “IPPIS is a scam” and “Stop Brain Drain.”

Odiwe emphasized the urgent need for funding public universities based on agreements dating back to 2012, 2013, and 2017. He highlighted outstanding issues such as unpaid salaries, promotion arrears, and the implementation of UTAS instead of IPPIS.

The government’s refusal to address these issues eventually led to a strike in 2022. ASUU called off the strike in the interest of students and the system, but the government responded by withholding salaries and failing to honor agreements.

ASUU is open to dialogue with the government, urging President Bola Tinubu to intervene and ensure the implementation of agreements for the betterment of the education sector.
