Amazon India Admits Safety Lapses in Warehouses
Amazon India recently acknowledged safety issues in its warehouses after workers were instructed not to take breaks, even to drink water or use the bathroom, until they met their targets. This came to light when staff members were asked to pledge to work continuously until their goals were achieved.
Following reports on working conditions, the National Human Rights Commission of India called on the labor ministry to intervene. In response, Amazon India confirmed the incident, calling it “an unfortunate and isolated incident.” The company stated that they prioritize the safety and well-being of employees, complying with all laws and regulations.
Workers at Amazon warehouses described long shifts in extreme heat, where seating was inadequate, and the cooling systems were ineffective. These issues are part of a larger global concern among Amazon warehouse workers demanding better working conditions and fairer wages.
Despite these challenges, Amazon emphasized that employees are allowed to take informal breaks, including restroom visits and water breaks. The company also monitors temperature changes and takes action to maintain comfortable working conditions.
As the “Make Amazon Pay” movement gains momentum, Amazon faces increasing pressure to address labor concerns and ensure the well-being of its workforce.
