The Abia State Government has announced plans to pay salary arrears owed to workers in the state civil service in installments, with the aim of completely eliminating the backlog. Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Mike Akpara, emphasized the government’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of workers and improving the state’s economy.
The current administration inherited a debt of N16.5 billion in salary arrears owed to workers in state institutions, including schools and hospitals. Akpara stated that efforts are underway to clear these arrears without hampering progress in other sectors.
The government is set to begin payments by July or August, starting with state-owned institutions like Abia State University and College of Education. Akpara noted past challenges of delayed payments and assured that the government is actively working towards resolving these issues.
Despite criticisms, Akpara defended the government’s financial management and transparency, highlighting the avoidance of new loan facilities. He reiterated the government’s commitment to conducting verification exercises for civil servants and delivering on development projects for the benefit of the people.
