Abia State Government to pay salary arrears in tranches
The Abia State Government has announced plans to pay off salary arrears owed to workers in the state civil service in tranches. The Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Mike Akpara, highlighted the government’s commitment to changing the narrative of salary delays during a press conference in Umuahia. The administration inherited a debt of N16.5 billion in salary arrears owed to workers in state-owned institutions.
Akpara emphasized the need to revitalize the state’s economy and ensure timely payment of salaries. The government plans to begin clearing the arrears owed to workers of state-owned institutions by July or August, with the aim of completing payments by the end of the year. The total amount owed to all institutions is N16.5 billion.
Despite challenges inherited from the previous administration, the state government is committed to managing its finances efficiently and fulfilling obligations without resorting to new loans. Akpara urged support for government policies and programs, emphasizing the importance of restoring order in the civil service to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.
