South Africa’s military reported on a mortar attack at its base in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to 20 individuals. The South African troops are stationed in Congo as part of the SADC deployment to aid the government in combating rebel forces.
The South African National Defence Force stated, “Four critically injured members are hospitalized, while those with minor injuries are expected to be discharged soon.”
This incident follows a similar attack in February, where two individuals were killed and three others wounded. President Cyril Ramaphosa responded to criticism of the South African contingent’s equipment readiness in Congo.
