The Unrest in Kenya: Protests Turn Deadly
At least ten protestors were killed as police opened fire on Kenyan protesters storming the parliament as they protested the passing of legislation that increased taxes. The chaos resulted in numerous injuries and a tense situation in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital.
Lawmakers sought refuge underground as demonstrators breached the security perimeter. A Red Cross volunteer, speaking anonymously, reported at least ten deaths with the likelihood of more casualties due to gunshot wounds.
Protesters were seen inside the parliament building, while fires burned outside, including a police vehicle. Despite the chaos, neither the police nor the government addressed the casualties during the nationwide protest led by Generation Z.
Protesters Target Lawmaker’s Residence
Protesters also stormed the private residence of Kenyan lawmaker Kuria Kimani, who supported the tax proposals. The situation escalated with police using tear gas to disperse the crowd while protesters looted shops and businesses in various cities.
Amnesty International’s Kenya chapter confirmed the deaths of five people and reported 31 injuries, highlighting the intensity of the protests and the impact on the country. The unrest also caused major disruptions to internet connectivity throughout Kenya and neighboring countries.
