Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, is set to plead guilty to violating US espionage laws in a deal that will finally bring an end to his long legal saga over the release of classified US military documents. Born in Australia, Assange gained notoriety for his computer programming skills and for founding WikiLeaks in 2006. The website gained prominence for its publication of classified US military documents, including videos of attacks in Iraq and sensitive diplomatic cables.
Assange’s legal troubles began in 2010 when he faced allegations of sex crimes in Sweden, leading to his arrest in the UK. Seeking asylum in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, he lived in confinement for seven years. Despite winning a UK court ruling against extradition, a US appeal put Assange back in legal jeopardy.
Now, facing a plea deal with US authorities, Assange is set to plead guilty to a single count of conspiracy in exchange for time served. This development marks a potential end to his tumultuous legal odyssey that has spanned over a decade.
