PPP MNAs claim PM Shehbaz losing popular support in Pakistan

The Drama Unfolding in the National Assembly

In a heated session at the National Assembly, members of the PPP raised objections against the federal budget, criticizing the tax burden it poses and the lack of direction. The ruling PML-N was also under fire, with claims that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has lost favor with the public. Despite their reservations, PPP members hinted that they would eventually have to vote in favor of the budget.

Meanwhile, lawmakers from smaller provinces, particularly south Punjab, renewed calls for the creation of new provinces to address the sense of deprivation in their regions. The MQM-P also voiced concerns over the budget’s impact on inflation and criticized the government for imposing taxes on middle-class citizens.

Notably, there were questions raised about Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb’s competence, with some calling him an ‘imported’ individual unaware of ground realities. The opposition, including the Sunni Ittehad Council, continued to protest alleged political victimization and demanded the release of PTI founder Imran Khan.

The proceedings highlighted a divide in the coalition government, with accusations of double standards and demands for new provinces gaining traction. As tensions simmered in the assembly, it became clear that this political drama was far from over.
