The Ojude Oba festival, held annually at the Awujale’s pavilion in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, celebrated its 2024 edition with a vibrant display of Yoruba culture. The event, attended by Ijebu people at home, in the Diaspora, and tourists, paid homage to the Awujale of Ijebuland, Sikiru Adetona. With a theme of ‘Unity and Harmony, Our Gift’, the festival garnered praise from Ogun Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who aims to elevate it to an international level.
The Federal Government also expressed interest in listing the festival as a UNESCO heritage event, recognizing its potential to diversify the economy and boost tourism revenue. However, concerns about security in the region were raised, highlighting the need for initiatives like boosting the Amotekun corps and improving infrastructure to attract more visitors.
Nigeria should follow examples like Brazil’s Rio Carnival, which significantly contributes to the economy, by revitalizing cultural festivals to drive tourism, preserve heritage, and stimulate economic growth. By investing in promotion, security, and infrastructure, states can create a thriving tourism industry and showcase their unique cultural offerings.
