The Nigerian Army continues to crack down on illegal oil bunkering in Abia State, with a recent raid on illegal mining sites in Obeaku resulting in the arrest of 17 suspects. This comes after seven suspects were apprehended last week at Isimmiri Waterside. With over 15 illegal refineries discovered at the site, General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Major General Hassan Dada, emphasized the environmental and economic impact of such activities.
The operation, part of “Operation Udoka,” aims to eradicate illegal bunkering and refining in the area to protect the environment and boost the economy. Dada stressed that those involved in illegal activities will face consequences and urged them to cease their actions. One suspect claimed innocence, stating she only sold cellophane materials to individuals from Aba, while cellophane was found to be a key component in the illegal oil refinery process.
The Nigerian Army remains vigilant in its efforts to combat illegal oil bunkering and safeguard the region’s resources and environment.\
