Three people were injured, including a Japanese woman and child, in a recent knife attack in Suzhou, China. The incident involved a man attempting to attack a bus carrying students.
The man, believed to be Chinese, targeted the Japanese individuals as they awaited the school bus. A Chinese woman onboard the bus was also harmed when she tried to prevent the attacker from boarding.
While the Japanese embassy confirmed the perpetrator’s arrest and stated that the injuries were not severe, cautionary measures for stabbing incidents were issued to Japanese nationals residing in China.
Despite downplaying the attack as isolated, the Chinese foreign ministry indicated an increase in stabbing incidents in various public locations across China. The incident occurred near a Japanese school in an area with a significant Japanese population.
Although knife assaults on foreigners have risen recently, China’s strict gun control laws make stabbing attacks prevalent in the country. Past incidents, including a kindergarten stabbing spree, highlight the ongoing concern of such violence in China.
