Bangladesh’s most notorious executioner, Shahjahan Bhuiyan, has passed away at the age of 74, just a year after being released from prison. Known for hanging criminals, including serial killers, Bhuiyan was rushed to the hospital with chest pain and later died while undergoing treatment.
Having served a 42-year prison sentence for robbery and murder, Bhuiyan became a hangman at Dhaka’s top jail. He executed at least 26 criminals, but reports suggest the number could be as high as 60, including prominent politicians charged with war crimes.

After his release, Bhuiyan faced legal issues for marrying a much younger woman and his controversial TikTok presence. He also published a book on his experiences as an executioner. Born in 1950, Bhuiyan was a former Marxist revolutionary who later joined a rebel group. Bangladesh is ranked third globally for death sentences by Amnesty International.
