RTÉ Director General Kevin Bakhurst has revealed a new five-year strategy for the broadcaster, titled ‘A New Direction’. This plan includes moving production of shows like Fair City and The Late Late Show off-site. The independent sector will be involved in producing Fair City, while The Late Late Show may have a combination of an in-house team and an independent company.
As part of the strategy, RTÉ aims to reduce staff by 20% through a voluntary redundancy program. Despite this, there will still be investment in training and development for remaining employees.
The broadcaster plans to increase spending on independent productions and invest in digital platforms, with new apps and more content on RTÉ Player. There are also plans for a new production center in Cork, to rebalance the national footprint of RTÉ.
The director general ruled out moving RTÉ’s headquarters due to cost and disruption, opting instead to invest in new studios in Donnybrook. The RTÉ Board has endorsed this new direction for the broadcaster.
