The trial of former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, began at the Federal High Court in Abuja with the EFCC presenting two witnesses. The first witness, a bank manager, Mr. Tochukwu Nnadi, shared details about the state government’s accounts, including security vote funds. He disclosed that payments were made to various entities based on account operators’ advice. The second witness, a businesswoman, Mrs. Chinwe Egbunam, was surprised to learn that funds from the state government had passed through her company’s account without her knowledge.
Egbunam clarified that she did not use the money or have personal dealings with Obiano, the former governor. She also highlighted the security challenges faced in Anambra during his tenure. Obiano is facing allegations of defrauding the state of N4 billion from the Security Vote Account. The defense lawyer reserved objections to the exhibits, and further hearing was adjourned to a later date.
The trial sheds light on the alleged financial misconduct during Obiano’s time as governor, raising questions about accountability and governance in Anambra State.
