Atiku urges constitutional reform to clarify traditional institutions’ roles

Former Vice President of Nigeria and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, is calling for constitutional reform to protect traditional institutions in the country. Atiku emphasized the need to recognize and define the responsibilities of traditional institutions and shield them from state government interference that threatens their stability. This call comes amid rising tensions in Kano, where a royal power struggle is unfolding.

Referred to as a Nigerian “Game of Thrones,” the clash of two rival royal figures in Kano highlights how traditional institutions are increasingly used as tools of political power in the country. Despite not being part of the elected government, traditional rulers hold significant influence across religious lines in Nigeria.

Atiku stressed the essential role traditional institutions play in maintaining peace and orderliness in communities and appealed to state governors to respect their offices. He believes that constitutional reform is vital to address the challenges faced by traditional institutions and to uphold their significance in governance structures.
