Assange expected to plead guilty to US espionage charge

Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, is expected to plead guilty to violating US espionage law, potentially leading to his release from imprisonment in Britain and allowing him to return to Australia, according to US prosecutors. Assange, 52, has agreed to plead guilty to a single criminal count of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified US national defense documents. He is expected to be sentenced on the island of Saipan and may receive credit for time served.

In 2010, WikiLeaks released classified US military documents, including information on wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, sparking controversy. Assange was indicted during Donald Trump’s administration for his involvement in leaking these documents. Charges against Assange have raised concerns about press freedom and freedom of speech.

Following his arrest in 2019, Assange has been held in a top-security jail in London, fighting extradition to the United States. Supporters have rallied for his release, arguing that criminal charges against him set a dangerous precedent for journalists and whistleblowers.
