Protests erupted in New Caledonia following the detention of seven pro-independence activists accused of inciting riots against a voting reform bill.

Buildings were set on fire, and one of the detained activists was charged in connection with previous violence.

President Macron intervened by suspending the proposed reforms to restore order in the territory.
