Canada should focus on its own affairs, Gil stressed
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil criticized Canada’s involvement in the territorial dispute between Venezuela and Guyana over the oil-rich Essequibo region. Gil accused Canada of serving the interests of ExxonMobil and called on them to stop interfering in the Caribbean region.
Gil disputed the statements made by Canadian High Commissioner in Guyana Mark Berman, asserting that Canada should focus on its own internal affairs rather than weighing in on the dispute. Meanwhile, Berman reaffirmed Canada’s support for Guyana and the respect for international law during Canada Day celebrations.
Highlighting the historical relationship between Canada and Guyana, Berman expressed Canada’s commitment to working together for mutual economic and social development goals. He emphasized the importance of the bilateral partnership and friendship between the two countries.
