Transport police sought following reported Dublin bus assault

SIPTU is urging for the immediate implementation of transport police following a violent incident on a Dublin bus last week. The attack occurred on the N4 route, leaving the driver traumatized after witnessing a passenger being assaulted by a group of youths. Suzanne Armstrong, representing SIPTU’s Respect Transport Workers campaign, emphasized the growing frequency of such incidents on public transport.

Armstrong highlighted the need for a stakeholder forum involving unions, transportation companies, law enforcement, and the government to address these safety concerns. SIPTU is advocating for the establishment of specialized transport police to ensure the safety of both passengers and drivers. Armstrong shared her own experiences of witnessing violence, drug use, and racial abuse while working as a driver.

The union’s recent survey revealed a surge in anti-social behavior since the onset of COVID-19, causing increased anxiety among transport workers. Armstrong stressed the uncertainty faced by drivers every day, urging for adequate security measures to protect them from potential risks.
