The Institute of Science Tokyo, created this fall through the merger of Tokyo Institute of Technology and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, is set to become a prestigious world-class university. President-elect Naoto Ohtake announced plans to reapply for a grant from a ¥10 trillion government fund in order to achieve this goal.
Ohtake also emphasized the importance of internationalization, revealing a target for 30% of undergraduate science and engineering students to be international by 2050, a significant increase from current rates at TMDU and Tokyo Tech. As a material science specialist, Ohtake was selected from a pool of three candidates to lead the newly formed institution, known as Science Tokyo.
