A recent strategic partnership agreement between Moscow and Pyongyang has raised concerns for a Seoul security adviser, who warned that Russia providing precision weaponry to North Korea could potentially lead South Korea to reconsider its own military aid policies.
The senior national security official, Chang Ho-jin, emphasized the importance of Russia’s actions, suggesting that providing high-precision weapons to North Korea would significantly impact South Korea’s relationship with Moscow. He stated that any cooperation increasing North Korea’s military capabilities would violate UN Security Council agreements.
Despite being a key US ally, South Korea has refrained from sending lethal aid to Ukraine to avoid escalating tensions with Russia. Chang stressed the need for corresponding efforts from Moscow to manage their relationship effectively.
As Russian President Putin downplayed concerns, he also warned South Korea against sending weapons to Ukraine, suggesting it would strain bilateral relations. The security adviser urged Russia to reconsider its actions to restore and develop relations post-conflict.
