Supreme Court Moves for Early Hearing of Military Courts Case

The Supreme Court has taken a significant step towards expediting the hearing of military courts cases, as reported by ARY News. A petition filed by Advocate Latif Khosa has urged the top court to fix the cases for hearing within the next week, starting from July 1.

Despite an earlier directive to hear the cases in January 2024, the delay has led to 103 under-trial prisoners being denied justice. The petition emphasizes the urgency of the situation, with the cases pending since December 13.

Previously, pleas seeking a larger bench for appeals against the annulment of trials of civilians in military courts were accepted by the Supreme Court. A six-member bench, led by Justice Aminuddin, is reviewing these appeals.

In response to the government’s decision to try suspects accused of attacking military installations under army laws, a wave of protests erupted. This led to calls for the military trials to be declared unconstitutional by prominent figures like Imran Khan, Jawwad S Khawaja, and Aitzaz Ahsan.
