Greenery Deficit in Baku: A Call for Action

The Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Azerbaijan, Umayra Taghiyeva, highlighted the alarming fact that the green areas per capita in Baku are only one-fifth of the recommended norm. Speaking at a conference in Khankendi city, she emphasized the ongoing environmental challenges that must be addressed.

Taghiyeva emphasized the need for extensive efforts and financial resources to combat the environmental issues. Despite the risks, she pointed out the positive outcomes from legal improvements and educational initiatives in the region.

Currently, Baku averages only five square meters of greenery per person, while the standard is 20–25 square meters. Urging for collective action, Taghiyeva acknowledged the government’s commitment to expanding green spaces.

As concerns grow, it is essential for all stakeholders to collaborate and prioritize sustainable solutions to enhance the city’s green infrastructure.
