A court has issued a travel ban on revenue officer Md Motiur Rahman, his wife Laila Kaniz, and son Ahamed Toufiqur Rahman Arnob in connection with the purchase of a goat for Tk 1.5 million. The ban, issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammad As-Shams Jaglul Hossain, came in response to a petition from the Anti-Corruption Commission. ACC Deputy Director Md Anowar Hossain, leading the committee investigating Motiur’s alleged illegal assets, made the petition.
Motiur, previously serving as president of the NBR’s Customs, Excise, and VAT Appellate Tribunal, was attached to the Ministry of Finance’s Internal Resources Division following the ban. He was also removed from his role as a government-nominated director of state-owned Sonali Bank.
The controversy arose when a man named Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat claimed on Facebook that he intended to buy a goat for Tk 1.5 million from Sadiq Agro, leading to questions about his source of income. The situation escalated when it was revealed that Ifat was allegedly Motiur’s son from his second marriage.
Motiur, who has previously been investigated for corruption by the ACC, denied Ifat’s claims in a television interview, stating that he only had one son. Despite facing scrutiny and controversies, Motiur defended his income sources, attributing his wealth to investments in businesses and the stock market.
