Iran has expressed its intention to retaliate against Canada for designating the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) as a “terrorist” organization. Iranian lawmakers are advocating for the Canadian military to be labeled as a “terrorist organization” in response to Canada’s actions against the IRGC.
Over 250 Iranian parliamentarians presented a motion urging the administration to designate the Canadian Army and federal police agencies as “terrorist organizations” in solidarity with the IRGC. They praised the IRGC’s efforts in defending Iran’s national security and supporting oppressed nations, particularly Palestinians.
The Iranian parliament condemned Canada for supporting the criminal Israeli regime and violating international laws by blacklisting the IRGC. They called on the Iranian Foreign Ministry to denounce Canada’s actions through diplomatic channels.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani criticized Canada’s decision as “political, unconventional, and unwise” and emphasized that it would not impact the IRGC’s operations. He condemned Canada’s violation of Iran’s sovereignty and disregard for international law.
Canada’s Hostility towards Iran
The Canadian government officially labeled the IRGC as a “terror group,” restricting thousands of Iranian officials from entering Canada and potentially facing deportation. Canadians were warned against traveling to Iran following the designation.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Italian ambassador to protest Canada’s decision, highlighting the growing tension between the two countries. In a separate incident, the European Parliament also called for the IRGC to be included on the EU’s “terrorist” list in January 2023.
