Tragedy struck a manufacturing factory near Seoul as a fire, likely sparked by exploding lithium batteries, claimed the lives of 22 workers, mostly Chinese migrants, and injured eight others. The incident occurred while workers were carrying out tasks involving batteries, causing a blaze that engulfed the factory in Hwaseong city.
Among the casualties were 18 Chinese, two South Koreans, and one Laotian. The factory housed many foreign workers, including ethnic Koreans from China, who often take on labor-intensive jobs within the country. The search for a missing worker continues, while two injured individuals remain in critical condition.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire and the safety measures in place at the factory. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has pledged government assistance for funeral arrangements and support for the victims’ families.
