HONG KONG (AP) — A suspected Chinese state-sponsored hacking group has targeted Taiwanese organizations, particularly in government, education, technology, and diplomacy sectors, as reported by cybersecurity intelligence company Recorded Future. Cyberattacks by the group known as RedJuliett were observed during a critical period of Taiwan’s politics, leading up to and following the country’s presidential elections.

Recorded Future’s analysis revealed that RedJuliett had attacked various organizations beyond Taiwan, including government agencies in several countries as well as religious and educational institutions. The cyber espionage activities targeted vulnerable VPN software to gain access to sensitive networks.
