Preventing Conflicts Between Herders and Farmers in East Darfur State
In El Firdous Locality of East Darfur State, local authorities and community committees are taking proactive measures to review migration routes and resting areas for herders in order to prevent conflicts with farmers during the upcoming agricultural season. Located 56 kilometres southwest of the state capital, El Daein, this area has historically seen clashes between farmers and herders due to encroachment on each other’s land.
Jumaa Haraz, the executive director of Al-Firdous locality, emphasized the importance of opening resting areas and reviewing migration routes before nomadic herders arrive to avoid potential conflicts. He urged farmers to respect herders’ rights and cautioned herders against damaging crops, assuring citizens that the government is committed to preventing disputes this season.
Local farmer Adam Omar highlighted incidents of encroachment on migration routes and called on government authorities to intervene before herders start their journey from south to north. By addressing these issues early on, both farmers and herders can coexist peacefully and ensure a successful agricultural season.
