As the ANC and the DA fight over the shape of new government, the weight of history rests heavily on their shoulders, writes Carol Paton.

For a while, back in 1994, we were an exception. Can we do it again?

We start the week finely balanced. Will the ANC and DA pull off a deal, or won’t they? If not, the consequences are not in SA Inc.’s favour. Markets will take fright and then stabilise in a few weeks but with a higher risk premium attached than before. The rand will remain on the back foot, and the cost of government debt will edge a little higher.
