As the dust settles after the recent polls, the ANC is facing challenges with demands for specific cabinet posts. The leaking of talks between parties has drawn criticism from the former ruling party, which emphasizes that its government of national unity (GNU) cannot be held hostage by any party.
Despite the leaked demands from the DA for key positions, including the post of deputy president, the ANC remains firm in asserting that the president has the final say on cabinet appointments. The party spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri highlighted the importance of establishing a government promptly for the benefit of the people.
While negotiations continue, the ANC assures that the announcement of the cabinet is imminent, based on considerations of electoral outcomes, national interest, and representativity. The formation of a GNU cabinet will prioritize the collective interest of the nation over individual party agendas.
The ANC’s focus is on efficient processes to ensure the seventh administration can begin its work promptly. With the support of 10 out of 18 political parties, the GNU aims to move forward in forming a functional cabinet and parliamentary structures for effective governance.
