UN Chief Warns Against Escalation in Middle East Conflict

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concerns over the escalating tensions between “Israel” and the Lebanese Resistance, warning against the risk of a larger conflict in the region. Following threats of invasion by “Israel”, Guterres called for both sides to commit to Security Council Resolution 1701 to prevent further escalation.

Rising Tensions

Guterres emphasized the need for immediate de-escalation and urged both parties to return to a cessation of hostilities to protect civilians, medical workers, and journalists. He highlighted the efforts by UN peacekeepers to defuse tensions and promote peace in line with the Security Council Resolution 1701.

In January, Guterres had also warned against the possibility of a genocide in Lebanon amidst increased tension at the Palestinian-Lebanese border. Recent reports suggest growing concerns in Washington over the potential for an all-out war between Hezbollah and “Israel”. The Biden administration is working to prevent further escalation and avoid dragging other actors, including Iran, into the conflict.
