Somalia took a significant step towards aligning its legal structures with those of the East African Community (EAC) during a consultative road map meeting last week. The meeting aimed at integrating Somalia into the EAC and enhancing regional cooperation and economic integration.
Chaired by South Sudan’s Under-secretary in the Ministry of East African Affairs, Beny Gideon Mabor, the one-week meeting in Nairobi covered the four pillars of the EAC – Customs Union, Common Market, Monetary Union, and Political Federation. Somalia’s delegation, led by Dr Abdusalam H Omer, delved into aligning its constitution and national laws with the EAC standards.
Upon full integration, Somalia will enjoy benefits like free movement of goods and persons within the EAC region. The EAC Secretary-General, Veronica Nduva, highlighted the importance of aligning Somalia’s processes with regional frameworks to ensure comprehensive integration.
With efforts towards shaping a brighter future for all EAC member states, Somalia’s commitment to regional integration sets it apart, surpassing even the Democratic Republic of Congo in progress.
