A recent surge of Russian missiles and drones has struck a Ukrainian thermal power plant and other vital energy facilities, exacerbating the strain on Ukraine’s already struggling electricity grid. These targeted attacks have significantly reduced Ukraine’s electricity generation capacity, leading to rolling blackouts and reliance on imported power from neighboring EU countries.
Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reported that the attacks hit energy infrastructure in four regions, including the capital city Kyiv, disrupting power supply to over 218,000 consumers. Ukraine’s largest private energy company, DTEK, stated that the repeated aerial assaults caused severe damage and injuries to employees.
With President Zelenskyy warning of a looming energy crisis, urgent calls have been made to bolster air defenses and protect the energy system from further attacks. The state energy operator, Ukrenergo, has announced additional electricity supply restrictions due to ongoing assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, compounded by maintenance needs at nuclear plants and adverse weather conditions.
