South Sudan’s opposition groups have united to address concerns raised by First Vice President Riek Machar regarding the peace talks in Nairobi. Dr. Machar expressed frustration over a new draft agreement that seemed to replace the original 2018 peace deal. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the existing agreement and not deviating from its terms.
In response, opposition groups including Pagan Amum, Gen. Paul Malong, and Gen. Stephen Buoy clarified that the purpose of the Nairobi talks, known as the Tumaini Initiative, is to devise a comprehensive rescue plan for South Sudan. This plan aims to tackle the root causes of the conflict and ensure lasting peace and stability in the country.
The opposition’s proposed roadmap includes key elements such as trust-building, forming an inclusive transitional government, security sector reforms, constitution-making, robust implementation strategies, and national healing efforts. The ultimate goal is to pave the way for successful elections and solidify peace in South Sudan.
Facilitated by Gen Sumbeiywo, the mediation process has led to a draft agreement suggesting an extension of the transitional period for better election preparations. As discussions continue, the opposition remains committed to finding sustainable solutions for the challenges facing the nation.
