A recent poll conducted by Kyodo News revealed that only 10.4 percent of the Japanese public support Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to win the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s leadership race and continue serving as premier. The survey, which included 512 households and 2,624 mobile phone users, indicated that the approval rating for Kishida’s cabinet is at a low of 22.2 percent, with a disapproval rate of 62.4 percent.
Despite Kishida’s unpopularity, he has pushed for a revised law to reform political funding rules, which has received criticism for not effectively addressing the issue. Additionally, a 40,000 yen income and residence tax cut introduced by the government has been met with skepticism, as 69.6 percent of respondents do not believe it helps struggling households amidst rising costs.
Support for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party saw a slight increase, while opposition parties experienced a slight decline in popularity. The public is calling for more transparency in political funding, highlighting the dissatisfaction with the current system.
Overall, the survey reflects a growing discontent with Kishida’s leadership and the need for more substantial reforms in Japan’s political landscape.
