The gas market in Poland is facing scrutiny due to the concentration of market share by Orlen, leading to concerns raised by government officials like Maciej Bando. Orlen’s entities control nearly 91% of the gas sales market, prompting calls for market liberalization to enhance transparency and competition.

Bando highlighted examples from countries like Italy, Spain, and Norway, where energy giants are strengthened rather than broken up, unlike the situation in Poland. The annual reports from the President of the Energy Regulatory Office show a steady increase in Orlen’s market share, signaling high market concentration.

To address this issue, Bando proposed steps like Gaz-System’s acquisition of gas storage facilities from Orlen and restructuring PSG for maximum unbundling. However, former Orlen CEO Daniel Obajtek criticized these moves, accusing the government of undermining Polish state interests and betraying national economic growth.

The debate continues as stakeholders discuss the best approach to balance market dominance, transparency, and national interests in the energy sector.
