Head of Pro-Independence Group in New Caledonia Charged Over Deadly Riots

Christian Tein, the leader of the pro-independence CCAT group in New Caledonia, has been charged and will be held in France along with three other activists, including Brenda Wanabow, the group’s communications director. The charges stem from deadly riots that occurred last month in the French Pacific territory.

Legal Developments

Tein was the first to face charges out of a group of 11 people arrested in connection with the violent incidents that resulted in nine deaths. The investigation led by Noumea’s chief prosecutor, Yves Dupas, includes accusations of armed robbery and complicity in murder or attempted murder. Tein’s lawyer expressed shock over his client being sent to a prison in eastern France.

Background of Riots

The unrest in New Caledonia erupted over an electoral reform that the indigenous Kanak people feared would diminish their political influence. The French government accused CCAT of instigating the violence, prompting a significant deployment of troops and police to quell the situation. CCAT denies involvement in the riots.
