Germany’s center-right parties are taking a tougher stance on Ukrainian refugees, creating a rift in Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s government. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) proposed cutting unemployment benefits for Ukrainian refugees and placing them under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act to incentivize finding employment. This proposal was supported by the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) but rejected by the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) and the Green Party.
Despite the FDP’s claims that this move would address labor shortages, critics like German economist Marcel Fratzscher called it “naked populism.” The government clarified that there are no plans to change support for Ukrainian refugees, pointing out that EU interior ministers recently extended their special protection status.
The debate highlights the importance of integration measures like language courses and job counseling for refugees. While concerns about supporting able-bodied men of fighting age exist, many Ukrainian refugees, like Alexander, are grateful for the opportunity to rebuild their lives and contribute to Germany’s economy.
