CNN — China has issued new guidelines threatening the death penalty for “diehard” Taiwan independence separatists, escalating tensions with the democratically governed island. The move follows China’s disapproval of President Lai Ching-te, whom they label a “separatist.” Taiwan has experienced increased pressure from China since Lai’s election, including military actions and trade sanctions.
According to China’s state-run Xinhua news agency, the guidelines direct Chinese authorities to punish those advocating Taiwan independence in line with existing laws, such as the 2005 anti-succession law granting China the legal basis for military action against Taiwan.
China’s Ministry of Public Security warned of severe penalties, including the death penalty, for the “crime of secession.” Despite Taiwan rejecting Beijing’s sovereignty claims, China continues to enact legal measures against Taiwanese officials.
President Lai has expressed a willingness to engage in talks with China, but the offer has been rebuffed. As the situation unfolds, tensions between China and Taiwan remain high, with Chinese courts having no jurisdiction over the island.
