Al Wusta Emerges as Top Fish Producer in Oman

In 2023, Al Wusta governorate in Oman stood out as the top fish producer, contributing 36% of the national production with 250,000 tonnes valued at RO100mn, as per the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources. Dr Ali bin Abdullah al Alawi, Director General of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in Al Wusta, highlighted the government’s focus on the fisheries sector due to its significant role in job creation.

With over 4,800 fishermen and a fleet including 2,011 fishing boats, Al Wusta has invested in a multi-purpose fishing port within the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD), housing facilities for commercial and artisanal fishing vessels, factories, and training centers. The region’s growth plans encompass attracting local and international fishing companies.

Alawi disclosed the development of the fish and food industries area in SEZAD, accommodating various fish processing factories. Al Wusta currently hosts 61 factories specializing in fish processing and production. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources is committed to further supporting the sector with investment exceeding RO162mn and upcoming fish farming projects.

Various investment opportunities have been introduced for fish farming projects across Al Wusta, including cultivating shrimp and fin fish varieties, all facilitated by the Tatweer platform.
