Israeli Army Bombs 69% of Schools in Gaza, UNRWA Says
According to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), the Israeli army has bombed 69% of schools housing displaced people in the Gaza Strip. The agency stated that the Global Education Cluster reported that nearly 70% of school buildings where displaced families sought shelter have been directly hit or damaged.
This disregard for humanitarian law is alarming and needs to cease immediately. UNRWA is calling for a ceasefire to prevent further destruction and loss of life.
In Gaza, over 76% of schools require reconstruction or major rehabilitation to become operational again. The Global Education Cluster, led by UNICEF and the local Child Protection Network, coordinates humanitarian responses in the education sector during instances of internal displacement.
The ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza, which has continued since October 7, has resulted in the complete destruction of 110 schools and universities, with hundreds more partially damaged. The death toll in Gaza has risen to over 10,000, with the majority being women and children.
Despite international condemnation, Israel has not adhered to calls for an immediate ceasefire, leading to further devastation in Gaza. The International Court of Justice has accused Israel of genocide and ordered the halt of operations in certain areas.
This relentless violence must end to prevent further loss of life and destruction in Gaza.
