The United States government strongly condemned the recent indiscriminate attacks by Yemen’s Houthi Rebels on civilian ships in the Red Sea. These attacks have disrupted maritime navigation and posed a significant threat to economic and humanitarian conditions in the region.
The latest aggression by the Iran-backed group resulted in the sinking of an M/V Tutor ship and the abandonment of another ship in the sea. The Houthis claimed the attack was due to the ship owner ignoring warnings not to sail to Israeli ports.
The US government emphasized that these attacks hinder vital humanitarian assistance from reaching Yemenis and risk dire economic situations. They called on the Houthis to comply with UN Security Council Resolution 2722 and cease all attacks immediately.
In response to the escalating Houthi attacks, the US formed a coalition with over 20 countries to safeguard commercial traffic in the Red Sea. The conflict in the region has also impacted South Sudan’s crude oil exports due to the threat posed to shipping routes.
