Informal discussions on nuclear weapons between the United States and China resumed in March for the first time in five years, with Beijing delegates assuring their American counterparts that they would not resort to using nuclear threats over Taiwan.

Chinese representatives assured U.S. delegates of not using or threatening to use nuclear weapons in a conflict against Taiwan. Despite being semi-official, the talks were deemed beneficial by the U.S. State Department.

China’s potential invasion of Taiwan, prompted by Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, has raised concerns. China has renewed threats against Taiwan, emphasizing its commitment to safeguard its sovereignty.

Participants in the discussions believe that China can succeed in a conventional fight over Taiwan without needing nuclear weapons. Russia’s alliance with North Korea and China aids its actions in Ukraine, despite repeated nuclear threats.
