Ukraine is reinforcing a critical hilltop town in eastern Donetsk to defend against advancing Russian forces, aiming to protect the region’s industrial heartland.
Despite heavy fighting since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, Ukrainian troops are struggling to hold their ground against the better-equipped Russian military.
The 24th Mechanized Brigade has been redeployed to bolster defenses in the Chasiv Yar sector, facing continuous frontal assaults and attempts to surround the town from different directions.
The town overlooks Kramatorsk and Kostiantynivka, making it a key strategic location, but has been heavily targeted by Russian airstrikes, as seen in recent drone footage.
In a separate incident, two people were killed and three injured in a Russian airstrike in the town of Selydove, prompting authorities to urge evacuation for safety.
The Kremlin declared annexation of Donetsk in late 2022, which has been under the control of Russian forces and separatists for years.
