Following a failed rebellion led by Russian paramilitary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, President Vladimir Putin has solidified his power and control over the country. Despite facing a significant challenge, Putin now appears more entrenched than ever.
Prigozhin met his end in a plane crash just two months after the mutiny, during which his Wagner mercenaries briefly seized control in Rostov-on-Don. Putin reacted by implementing strict rules to prevent anyone from gaining the same level of autonomy as Prigozhin.
Putin’s decision to prioritize control and loyalty in resource allocation has reshaped the military establishment. He ousted Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and arrested senior military figures on corruption charges. Putin appointed economist Andrei Belousov as the new defense chief to avoid influential military leaders.
The President’s dominance and power were further demonstrated in his landslide victory in the March elections, lacking any genuine opposition. Putin’s actions, coupled with Alexei Navalny’s death, have instilled fear and compliance among the population, despite the lack of genuine support for the regime.
