Prosecutors are urging the judge in Donald Trump’s hush money case to uphold the gag order preventing him from criticizing jurors and court staff. They agreed to lift restrictions on his public statements about trial witnesses but argued that Trump’s history of inflammatory remarks justifies the need for certain provisions to remain in place.
The gag order, issued in March, prohibited Trump from making public statements about witnesses and jurors. His defense team, however, is pushing for the order to be lifted now that the trial has concluded, citing concerns over his First Amendment rights.
Prosecutors acknowledge the need to relax some restrictions but argue that the safety of court staff is still at risk, with more than 60 threats made against them in recent months. The judge is expected to make a ruling soon, possibly before Trump’s upcoming debate with President Joe Biden.
